Introduction to the Mental Health Lead Role

One day course (or self-studied online)

A one-day introduction to the role of the Mental Health Lead. Suitable for someone who has not completed senior mental health leadership training. This course helps people understand the requirements of the role and some common tools to help fulfil these requirements. Participants are required to submit their individual or setting action plan to gain certification.

Versions are available for designated Governors and assistant mental health leads (these cannot be claimed using the DfE grant system).

Intermediate Designated Mental Health Lead

Two-day course (or self-studied online)

A course designed to explore the full scope of the role of the Mental Health Lead at a deeper level in order to embed their whole-setting approach, establish a comprehensive strategy to plan for meeting the mental health and wellbeing needs of pupils and action plan across a setting. It is expected the lead will have already have been in post and have an understanding of the role.

People completing this course have experience of the role, and seek a more in-depth understanding of the role to strategically meet the needs of their pupils earlier and/or more effectively beyond the existing provision. This evidence-based two-day course addresses these problems by taking the participants through all aspects of the role at a deeper level, supporting the lead to think strategically and further embed their whole-setting approach. In addition, they have access to qualified professionals who lead peer-level discussions to overcoming potential barriers, resistance or problems. Participants complete a simple online portfolio based on their plans for applying the learning to gain the certification.

Advanced Designated Mental Health Lead

Three day course (or self-studied online), leading to a level 4 qualification

A course designed for established mental health leads in a school or college and know the tools required for this role. This reflection-based course goes through the full breadth of the role in more depth and uses discussion to share experiences and learn from others to deepen a mental health lead’s knowledge, skills and understanding.

The Advanced Designated Mental Health Lead course is designed to take a Lead from “what do I have to do” to “what’s the best way to achieve it” in order to achieve a coordinated and consistent approach to mental health.

This three-day course starts from the basis leads know about the role and focusses on how to embed practice across a setting and deal with barriers in getting support right for your pupils using discussion, reflection and theoretical input. Designed for those who already understand the role, but now want to be more proficient and make decisions about the best way of achieving an outcome, particularly when overcoming resistance or barriers. Participants may be grouped on the course according to phase, type of setting or position within an organisation to enhance their learning experience.

Participants complete a portfolio evidencing how they will embed the full role requirements and receive dual certification on submission – an Advanced Designated Mental Health Lead and a level 4 Ofqual-regulated qualification in Mental Health Aware Leadership (Educational Mental Health Lead).
